Sometimes, the purpose of art is not to depict reality but to transform an idea into something aesthetically pleasing or disagreeable, and most of the time, into something meaningful. And the way to do this is to distort, exaggerate, document, and embellish what is there. Through various techniques and materials, we see how a painting, drawing, or sculpture changes with time. Mediums darken, certain colors fade, but we as viewers, are adding our own interpretation to the work. In this show, the artists capture the nature of their subjects by amplifying the qualities that make them distinctly fragile, distorted, and altered. With lines, forms, and hues that distract from one another, they are employed specifically to draw your eye and decipher their perspectives.

“Over Time” is a group show that emphasizes the power and fragility of transformation and distortion of the self, nature, objects, symbols, emotions, and even meaning of words. As we examine the works by Bembol dela Cruz, Carlo Angelo Saavedra, Is Jumalon, Don Djerassi Dalmacio, and Denver Garza, we observe how they worked with the idea of transformation in the purest, candid, and even fabricated progression. As we are seduced by the nuances and dynamics of their compositions, the elements establish connections that allow us to discover or impose meaning. The works contain far-reaching ideas with optical sleights of hand that construe a specific purpose to the artists as they either abandon or nurture the realm of fine art, hence dissolving the boundaries between “high” and “low” forms of tradition.

Essentially, transformation in the works of the artists simulate the recovery and improvement of techniques. As a result, on the outside, we see the stretched and magnified core fusing together as transfiguration occurs. We see then that each artist’s authority has a vulnerability that art can reveal. Perhaps they are meant to decompose over time or remain in an altered state through the passing of time.
