Van Tuico's solo show of abstract work continues to explore an oeuvre of quasi-representational and nonrepresentational matter art, one reduced to material and void of allusion, art touted as its purest state. However, in Tuico's work the transformative role of thought on materials is the prime creative drive. As such, "Mind over Matter" is a fitting name for this collection.
In "Mind over Matter." Tuico presents 11 exemplary abstract paintings from an art making process refined for over a decade. Tuico continues with building materials such as cement and steel as raw components to fashion into relief-like abstracts.
One cannot escape comparing some of Tuico's work to the innards and unfinished sections of houses and edifices. For Tuico, even dilapidated and exposed surfaces can birth enigmatic titles and interpretations. This is because the processes that go into making them are never absent of intellectual exercises and thoughtful experiences, from the simulation of the effects of time on surfaces, to the inscription of personal narratives, to the realization of philosophical meanderings.
